KFC Attempts To Recreate A Southern Classic!
KFC-Nashville-Hot-Chicken

If you love fried chicken as much as I do, maybe you were just as excited when KFC announced its new Nashville Hot Chicken.  How could KFC do any wrong by marrying their legendary fried chicken recipe with the seasonings and flavorings of Nashville Hot Chicken?  The KFC’s take on Nashville hot chicken is an experience for your tastebuds unlike anything KFC has released prior.  For this review, I tried the 2 Piece & 3 Piece meals of the chicken on the bone.  This review does not take the tenders into consideration.  Also, in regards to spicy foods, I would describe myself as an “occasional” spicy food eater.

So what did I think about this all new Nashville Hot Chicken?  Let’s find out in my breakdown.

KFC Nashville Hot Chicken Review:

Texture:

The best way to describe the texture of the Nashville Hot Chicken is pretty simple.  If you’ve had the original or crispy chicken from KFC before, the texture itself is identical.  The crispy skin of the chicken, down to the moisture of the meat itself is the same as you are used to.  If you’ve loved any KFC chicken prior (in terms of its texture), you will feel right at home here.

Taste:

The taste was very interesting to me on my first and second attempts at eating this.  The Nashville Hot seasoning is robust, and unlike anything on KFC’s menu right now.  It has plenty of cayenne, paprika, and heat to satisfy you, but regardless of the “HOT” labels on the packaging and marketing, it is not “hot” in the same way one would describe a jalapeno or habanero burn.  It is more of a “smokey” or “peppery” burn that sneaks up on you and burns the back of your throat when you least expect it.  In my experience, it definitely caught me off guard!  However, eating some of the provided pickles, or some coleslaw definitely made the heat more bearable.  I would also recommend drinking a raspberry iced tea or lemonade with it as those sweet flavors definitely tamed the heat a little.  I also think the chicken has an aftertaste reminiscent of Lay’s KC Masterpiece potato chips.  To summarize the taste, I loved it.

Presentation:

Presentation is where I am a bit torn.  Unlike the regular chicken meals, the Nashville Hot Chicken comes in a plastic container.  This is a plus in my opinion.  However, the first thing you will notice is the pool of grease on the bottom of the container.  On my two taste tests, it was more grease than I would care for.  Not only does the grease look a bit off putting, that pool is also where the most potent of spices seems to live and float around.  My advice?  If you don’t want to get burned, leave the grease there!  The grease also ruined the biscuit for me because when you pick up the biscuit, it is completely soaked in that grease, making it almost inedible.

What We Liked

It's taste is unlike anything KFC has presented before. Although their tried and true recipe is legendary, this fresh idea is very welcomed on their menu.

What We Hated

The amount of grease on the bottom of the tray is rather unsightly, and completely ruins your biscuit.

Bottom Line

If you love fried chicken from KFC, and are looking for something new to entertain your tastebuds, definitely grab some today! If you don't like spicy or heavily peppered flavors, avoid this at all costs! Also, do yourself a favor, and order a coleslaw or extra pickles to ease some of the heat.
